Rex Carver is hired to locate Arthur Finch, the unclaimed beneficiary of a modest legacy. Finch does not wish to be found, and the search soon connects him to a Hatton Garden diamond robbery. The stolen stones are intended for an international exchange involving narcotics, political agents and several parties whose temporary alliances are based entirely on profit.

Carver’s pursuit carries him from Britain to Ireland and eastern France, including a prolonged journey by canal barge towards Lyon. The case expands a routine inheritance enquiry into a contest between criminals and state interests without allowing either side a simple moral advantage. Published in 1966, the novel reflects Cold War anxieties about smuggling, foreign intelligence and the movement of illicit wealth across a Europe whose borders were open enough for tourism but closely watched by governments.
