Champlain’s Dream

Champlain’s Dream is a large-scale biography of Samuel de Champlain, following him from the French wars of religion and Atlantic voyages to the exploration of the St Lawrence, the founding of Quebec and the long struggle to secure New France. Fischer presents Champlain as a soldier, navigator, cartographer, organiser and diplomat whose career depended on repeated negotiation with merchants, courtiers and Indigenous allies.

The book gives particular weight to Champlain’s attempt to build a colony through alliance and coexistence rather than simple replacement of Native societies. It also traces the warfare, trade rivalries and imperial pressures that complicated that ambition, placing one life within the uncertain European and Indigenous founding of French North America.
