The Apache Wars traces the prolonged conflicts between Apache groups, Mexico and the United States across the Southwest. It places raiding, retaliation and military campaigning within a borderland transformed by changing sovereignty, settlement and the disruption of established trade and subsistence patterns.
The account follows leaders including Cochise, Victorio and Geronimo and the campaigns that ended with the surrender of the Chiricahua in 1886. It also considers forced relocation, imprisonment and the survival of Apache communities beyond the conventional end of the wars.
