Fifteen-year-old Jessie Ann Gaebele enters F. J. Bauer’s Winona photography studio in 1907 and discovers that her artistic eye is matched by a talent for the hazardous business of darkrooms, explosive flash powder and commercial portraiture. The profession offers a future beyond conventional work for women, but it also places her daily beside a married employer.

Inspired by the author’s grandmother, the novel is a coming-of-age story about vocation and temptation. Jessie’s Christian faith exposes rather than conceals the moral danger of her attraction, forcing her to recognise that a dream pursued without regard for another household can darken the very gift that gives her life light.
