An abandoned white child is rescued and raised among Oregon’s Paiute people, where she becomes Shell Flower and learns a language of family and belonging different from that of settler society. When she is cast out, she must enter the white world carrying memories and loyalties that neither community fully understands.

Attachment and loss follow her through adulthood, but the novel does not make cultural displacement simple or painless. Christian faith becomes a source of constancy as Shell Flower searches for a love that can recognise the whole of her experience rather than demand that one identity erase another.
