Pliny the Elder was a Roman administrator, naval commander and encyclopaedic writer whose Natural History collects ancient knowledge of the world.

Pliny the Elder wrote the Natural History, an encyclopaedic work covering geography, astronomy, animals, plants, medicine, minerals, art and human invention. He died during the eruption of Vesuvius while commanding the fleet at Misenum.
