Chinese Civil War and Communist Revolution

The alliance between the Nationalist Party and the Chinese Communist Party broke apart violently in 1927. Nationalist forces attempted to suppress Communist organisations in cities and the countryside, while Communist bases developed new military and political structures. Campaigns, retreats and the Long March transformed the movement before renewed Japanese aggression forced an uneasy wartime alliance.

After Japan’s defeat in 1945, large-scale civil war resumed. Both sides mobilised armies and governed territory, but the Communists gained decisive rural support and military advantage. Nationalist forces withdrew to Taiwan in 1949, and Mao Zedong proclaimed the People’s Republic of China on the mainland.
