Kangxi Era, 1661–1722

1661–1722 CE

The Kangxi Emperor inherited the Qing throne as a child in 1661 and initially ruled through four regents. After removing Oboi from power, he asserted personal control over a dynasty still facing Ming loyalism, powerful provincial feudatories and resistance from the Zheng regime in Taiwan.

The defeat of the Three Feudatories and the conquest of Taiwan strengthened Qing authority. Campaigns and diplomacy on the northern frontier also brought the empire into conflict with Russia and with the Dzungar ruler Galdan.

The Deer and the Cauldron uses the Kangxi era as a stage for court satire and competing forms of loyalty. Its fictional anti-hero moves among imperial officials, rebels, monks, foreign powers and secret societies while real events steadily consolidate Qing rule.
