Jurchen Jin Dynasty, 1115–1234

The Jurchen Jin dynasty was founded in Manchuria and rapidly destroyed the Khitan Liao before capturing the Northern Song capital of Kaifeng in 1127. It governed a multi-ethnic state extending across northern China and the steppe frontier.

Jin rulers adopted Chinese imperial institutions while preserving elements of Jurchen military and social organisation. Their long conflict with the Southern Song was followed by increasing pressure from the Mongols, who destroyed the dynasty in 1234.

Historical fiction set in the Jin state can explore conquest, collaboration, cultural assimilation and divided identity. In Legends of the Condor Heroes, Yang Kang’s status as a Jin prince despite his Song ancestry turns the dynasty’s political order into a personal moral conflict.
