Antonine Roman Britain

96–192 CE

Antonine Roman Britain covers the province from the accession of Nerva in AD 96 to the death of Commodus in 192. The period included the construction of Hadrian’s Wall, the later advance to the Antonine Wall, repeated changes in northern frontier policy, and the continued development of towns, roads, forts, villas and local government.

The province was neither uniformly peaceful nor simply divided between Romans and Britons. Soldiers, civilians, merchants, local elites and communities with mixed identities lived within a connected but unequal imperial system. The northern frontier remained especially important because policy alternated between consolidation, withdrawal and renewed occupation.

The period encompasses Hadrian’s Wall, Vindolanda, the Antonine advance, auxiliary units, provincial towns and the interaction between military and civilian life in Roman Britain between AD 96 and 192.
