Herod gained the kingdom with Roman backing and maintained power through military force, dynastic marriage and loyalty to successive Roman leaders. His building programme included the expansion of the Jerusalem Temple.

The royal household was marked by repeated succession disputes and executions. After Herod's death, Rome divided his territories among members of his family.

King Jesus uses a highly speculative reconstruction of Herodian genealogy to present Jesus as a concealed dynastic heir; this is the novel's premise rather than an accepted historical conclusion.
