Battle of Leuctra

The Battle of Leuctra took place in 371 BC between Thebes and Sparta. Epaminondas used an unusually deep left wing and concentrated force to defeat the Spartan army and kill many of its elite Spartiates. The result shocked the Greek world.

Leuctra mattered because it broke the aura of Spartan invincibility. It opened the way for Theban influence, the liberation of Messenia and the weakening of Sparta as a dominant power. The battle also became a classic example of tactical innovation overturning an established military reputation.

Xenophon’s Hellenica is an important contemporary literary source for the political and military world surrounding Leuctra. Later accounts, especially Plutarch, helped preserve the reputation of Epaminondas and the battle’s place in the history of Greek warfare.
