War
1540–1542 CE
The Mixtón War began when Caxcan and neighbouring peoples in Nueva Galicia resisted Spanish demands, enslavement and colonial settlement. Strongholds including the Mixtón were defended against repeated assaults.
Leaders associated with the resistance included Francisco Tenamaztle. Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza eventually led a large force of Spanish and Indigenous allies into the region, while Pedro de Alvarado was fatally injured during the campaign.
This context supports fiction about early resistance to Spanish colonial rule and the contested formation of New Spain after the conquest of Tenochtitlan.
