The Aztec Empire developed from the Triple Alliance of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Tlacopan after 1428. Military expansion and tribute brought goods, labour and captives into the Basin of Mexico from subject communities across central Mesoamerica.
Tenochtitlan became one of the largest cities in the world, with causeways, canals, markets, temples and an imperial court. The empire remained politically diverse, and resentment among tributary peoples later helped Hernán Cortés build an Indigenous alliance against Mexica rule.
