Early American Motion Picture Industry

During the 1890s, inventors, photographers and entrepreneurs developed cameras, projectors and exhibition systems that turned moving images into a commercial attraction. Short films were shown in vaudeville houses and specialised parlours before nickelodeons created a mass urban audience.
Production companies soon moved from brief actuality films towards staged comedy, melodrama and longer narrative works. Competition over patents, performers and distribution helped push production westward, where Southern California offered varied scenery and reliable weather.
