The upper Ohio Valley became a rapidly changing frontier in the years before and during the American Revolutionary War. Settlers moved into the region around Wheeling and Fort Henry while Native nations resisted encroachment and alliances shifted as the wider imperial and revolutionary conflicts developed.
Fort Henry became one of the best-known fortified settlements on the frontier. Raids, militia patrols, captivity, missionary activity and retaliatory violence made the Ohio country a particularly brutal borderland where the Revolution overlapped with long-standing struggles over land and sovereignty.
