French Colonial North America, 1534–1763

French expeditions and settlements developed from the Gulf of St Lawrence into a continental network of forts, missions, farms and trading relationships. New France remained thinly populated compared with British colonies but occupied an extensive strategic geography.

French authority depended heavily on diplomacy and alliance with Indigenous nations. Trade, warfare, conversion and intermarriage created societies that cannot be understood solely as extensions of European government.

Champlain’s Dream concentrates on the formative decades in which Samuel de Champlain explored the region, founded Quebec and attempted to secure a durable French presence through alliance and settlement.
