Samuel de Champlain

1574–1635

Champlain took part in Atlantic and St Lawrence voyages, mapped coastlines and waterways, and founded Quebec in 1608. He repeatedly returned to France to secure commercial and royal backing for the colony.

His alliances with Innu, Algonquin and Wendat partners involved trade, diplomacy and warfare against Haudenosaunee enemies. He died at Quebec in 1635 after decades spent building a permanent French presence in North America.
