Henry IV was king of Navarre and later the first Bourbon king of France, ending the French Wars of Religion through military victory, conversion and political settlement.
Raised as a Protestant, Henry survived the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre after his marriage to Margaret of Valois. He became king of France in 1589, converted to Catholicism and issued the Edict of Nantes in 1598, granting limited protections to Huguenots. He was assassinated in 1610.
The City of Tears presents Henry as the Huguenot bridegroom at the Paris wedding of 1572. The ceremony draws Protestant nobles to the capital and becomes the political prelude to the massacre through which Henry survives.
