Margaret of Valois was a French princess whose 1572 marriage to Henry of Navarre became closely associated with the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.
The daughter of Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici, Margaret married the Protestant Henry of Navarre in Paris as part of an attempted religious reconciliation. The massacre began days later. She later became queen of Navarre and briefly queen of France before her marriage was annulled in 1599.
In The City of Tears, the Joubert family travels to Paris for Margaret’s wedding, placing fictional witnesses inside the political ceremony that preceded the massacre. Her marriage embodies the failed hope that dynastic alliance could end the religious wars.
