Puritan New England

1620–1692 CE

Puritan New England developed from English religious migration in the seventeenth century, including Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay. Communities valued covenant, discipline, literacy and religious conformity, while living amid conflict with Indigenous peoples and internal dissent. The world was intensely moral, but also economically and politically practical.

It matters because it shaped American religious, legal and communal traditions while exposing the dangers of intolerance and exclusion. Dissenters, accused witches, servants, traders and Indigenous neighbours all complicate the image of a unified Puritan society. Fiction by Geraldine Brooks, Kathleen Kent and others uses this world for stories of faith, fear, gender and social pressure.
