British Conquest of the Dutch East Indies
1810–1811 CE
Britain targeted the Dutch East Indies after the Netherlands came under Napoleonic control. Naval and military expeditions captured islands and bases whose spice trade and position threatened British interests in India.
The campaign culminated in the invasion of Java in 1811. British occupation was temporary, but it involved major debates over administration, commerce and the future of colonial rule.
To the Eastern Seas follows Kydd under Edward Pellew and aligns him with Stamford Raffles’s argument for striking the centre of Dutch power rather than taking isolated outposts.
