The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom series follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon nobleman raised by Danes, through the Viking wars and the creation of a united English kingdom. Beginning with the Great Heathen Army’s destruction of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the novels trace Alfred the Great’s recovery of Wessex and the victory at Edington, followed by the campaigns of Edward, Æthelflæd and Æthelstan in Mercia, Northumbria and the Danelaw.

Uhtred’s divided identity places him between Christian kingship and the warrior culture of his Danish family as he fights to reclaim Bebbanburg. The later books move from fortress assaults and succession wars to the Battle of Brunanburh, where Æthelstan’s victory determines whether the kingdoms Uhtred helped defend will become England.
