Flanders Campaign

The Flanders Campaign took British, Austrian, Dutch and Hanoverian forces into the Low Countries against the armies of Revolutionary France. It was a difficult campaign of shifting alliances, exposed supply lines, bad weather and repeated reverses rather than a clear path to victory.

The campaign mattered because it showed the British army operating in a European coalition war before the later, more familiar victories of the Napoleonic period. Officers learned hard lessons about command, logistics, retreat and the fighting power of the French revolutionary armies.
