Battle of Medellín

The Battle of Medellín was fought on 28 March 1809 between French forces under Marshal Victor and a Spanish army commanded by General Gregorio García de la Cuesta. The battle began with Spanish resistance but ended in a severe defeat after French cavalry and infantry broke the line.

Spanish casualties were heavy, and the defeat showed the danger of facing experienced French forces in open battle without reliable coordination and reserves. It formed part of the difficult rebuilding period after Britain’s retreat to Corunna.

Send Me Safely Back Again uses Medellín as one of the tests for the 106th Foot and their Spanish allies. The battle offers fiction a setting of allied uncertainty, battlefield shock and the contrast between patriotic commitment and military vulnerability.
