The Battle of Arausio was fought near the Rhône in 105 BC between Roman armies and the Cimbri and their allies. The consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus and the proconsul Quintus Servilius Caepio refused to cooperate effectively, leaving their camps and forces vulnerable to separate defeat.
Ancient accounts give enormous Roman losses, and although the exact figures are uncertain, the destruction was severe enough to create panic in Italy. The defeat discredited aristocratic commanders and strengthened support for Gaius Marius, who was entrusted with rebuilding Rome’s defence.
