Siege of Carrickfergus Castle

Carrickfergus Castle was one of the strongest English positions in Ulster when Edward Bruce invaded Ireland in 1315. Scottish and Irish forces secured the town but the castle garrison continued to resist, creating a prolonged siege while Bruce’s army campaigned elsewhere.

The defenders suffered severe shortages before surrendering in 1316. Control of Carrickfergus gave Bruce an important base and symbol of authority in Ulster, but it did not solve the wider problems of supply, famine and contested loyalty that would eventually defeat his Irish kingship.

The Waste Land uses Carrickfergus as the convergence point for Richard Savage’s attempt to rescue his daughter and the wider military struggle. The siege offers fiction a setting of starvation, divided communities, covert entry, desperate raids and a fortress whose survival carries political consequences far beyond its walls.
