Sibylla of Jerusalem

Sibylla of Jerusalem was queen of Jerusalem during the crisis that led to Saladin’s victory at Hattin and the fall of the city in 1187. Her marriage to Guy of Lusignan and contested succession placed her at the centre of crusader politics.

Sibylla of Jerusalem also held the offices or ranks of King of Jerusalem. Sibylla of Jerusalem belonged to the House of Gâtinais-Anjou and operated within Kingdom of Jerusalem. Sibylla of Jerusalem was born in Jerusalem and died in Acre.

In Sharon Kay Penman’s The Land Beyond the Sea, Internal divisions, Raynald of Châtillon’s attacks and disputed military decisions weaken the kingdom, culminating in the destruction of the crusader army at Hattin and the loss of Jerusalem.
