In 1942 Britain’s small-boat raiders operate in the Mediterranean at the edge of conventional war, landing from submarines to sabotage Axis installations and gather intelligence. Sergeant Jim Hunter of the Black Watch joins a tiny force sent towards Rhodes during Operation Anglo, where secrecy and surprise are expected to compensate for the extreme vulnerability of men working far behind enemy lines.
The attack on Axis airfields becomes a costly demonstration of what clandestine warfare demands: navigation in darkness, unreliable communications, improvised explosives and the knowledge that capture may be as likely as escape. Hunter survives the operation only to be drawn deeper into a form of service in which small teams, personal initiative and politically sensitive missions matter more than the massed formations of the conventional army.
