Victorian Edinburgh Medicine and Anaesthesia

1847–1854 CE

During the middle decades of the nineteenth century Edinburgh was one of Europe’s leading centres of medical teaching and practice. The university, Royal Infirmary, maternity services, private consulting rooms and anatomy schools brought students and practitioners into a dense professional world in which new techniques could spread rapidly. James Young Simpson, Professor of Midwifery at the University of Edinburgh, became one of the city’s most prominent physicians.

In 1847 Simpson began using ether in obstetrics and then tested chloroform with colleagues before announcing it as a new anaesthetic agent in November. Chloroform quickly transformed surgery and childbirth but also generated argument about safety, professional authority and whether pain in labour should be relieved. Its public status changed decisively in 1853 when Queen Victoria received chloroform during the birth of Prince Leopold.

Ambrose Parry’s Raven and Fisher mysteries use this medical revolution as a recurring historical framework. The Way of All Flesh, The Art of Dying, A Corruption of Blood and The Spendthrift and the Swallow place fictional investigations inside Simpson’s circle, using anaesthesia, medical rivalry, women’s exclusion from formal training and the contrast between Edinburgh’s wealthy patients and poorer districts as part of the plot rather than as background.
