Henry I’s death in 1135 leaves England with a succession he had tried to settle but could not secure. His daughter, Empress Matilda, expects the oaths sworn to her to be honoured; instead her cousin Stephen takes the crown. The disputed succession becomes the civil war later known as the Anarchy, drawing nobles, towns and families into years of shifting allegiance and violence.

McGrath makes Matilda the political and emotional centre of the novel: an experienced imperial widow confronting a society reluctant to accept a woman ruling in her own right. Her contest with Stephen becomes more than a struggle for a crown, exposing the fragile mechanics of medieval kingship—inheritance, oath, military support and public legitimacy—and the personal cost of refusing to surrender a dynastic claim.
