Beginning in Virginia in 1774, the novel follows the Falconbridge family as colonial tensions harden into the American Revolution. A conflict between the Tory Lord Wraybourne and his nephew Anthony makes political allegiance a family division, so the struggle over independence enters through inheritance, marriage, property and personal loyalty rather than through military chronology alone.

Farnol extends the family story beyond the Revolution into later generations, carrying inherited divisions toward the nineteenth century and the era of the American Civil War before looking further into the family’s future. The broad chronology makes the book a pageant in the literal sense: one household becomes a vehicle for showing how victories celebrated by one generation can leave disputes and identities that descendants must renegotiate.
