Beltane lives as a smith in a forest hermitage, content with his craft and largely ignorant of the political world beyond the trees. Under the guidance of Ambrose the Hermit he develops the strength and discipline of a warrior, and a chance encounter draws him toward Helen, Duchess of Mortain, and a conflict in which private loyalty becomes inseparable from resistance to oppression.

Farnol sets the story in an invented but recognisably medieval landscape of castles, feudal lords, outlaws and armed retinues. Beltane’s movement from solitary craftsman to leader gives the romance the shape of a political awakening: he must learn that honour cannot remain private when communities are subject to violence. The setting is deliberately legendary rather than tied to one documented reign, making the book a historical fantasy built from medieval social and martial forms.
