By the later nineteenth century the Mortymer world has been transformed by the wealth and scale of Welsh industry. Tom Mortymer, heir to a prosperous tinplate concern, rejects the life planned for him and chooses instead a more precarious existence with Jen Wildflower, a Romany woman whose presence challenges the family’s assumptions about class, property and respectability.
Their attempt to live apart from industrial society on Flatholm cannot permanently sever the obligations created by inheritance and kinship. When they return to Wales, older Mortymer conflicts re-emerge in a world where the family has moved from exploited labour to ownership. Cordell closes the long saga by asking what industrial success has cost the descendants of people who once fought the masters of the valleys.
