In the German Palatinate during the Reformation, the town of Dürkheim and the neighbouring Benedictine abbey are drawn into a struggle over religious authority, property and civic power. Old obligations to the monastery confront the spread of reforming ideas, while local families must decide whether inherited loyalties can survive a movement that is changing both worship and government.

The Heidenmauer uses the destruction of established religious structures to examine how theological argument becomes a social and political conflict. Cooper gives weight to Catholic and Protestant motives alike, showing magistrates, monks, townspeople and nobles reacting differently as reform threatens institutions that had organised local life for generations.
