Cooper portrays Venice as a beautiful but coercive oligarchy in which legal forms conceal decisions made by a narrow ruling class. Jacopo’s apparent criminality and the state’s manipulation of his name allow the novel to expose how reputation can be manufactured and how political systems can punish individuals while preserving an outward appearance of order.
