In the 1790s, the growing settlement of Templeton on Otsego Lake is governed by Judge Marmaduke Temple, whose confidence in law and improvement is challenged by the older frontier world represented by Natty Bumppo, known here as Leatherstocking. The arrival of the young hunter Oliver Edwards and his attachment to Elizabeth Temple draw questions of inheritance, land and family history into the town’s disputes.

The novel sets clearing, farming and civic order against habits of hunting and woodland independence that preceded them. Cooper gives unusual attention to wasteful slaughter, changing landscapes and the pressure of private property on customary freedom, making Natty’s conflict with the law part of a broader transition from frontier society to the institutions of the early republic.
