The Breed

James Munroe grows up between two inheritances, raised by his Sioux family and his Scottish father in a western world being transformed by war, settlement and expanding private claims to land. Service during the Civil War hardens the skills he learned on the frontier, but returning to New Mexico offers no simple return to peace.
A powerful landowner threatens the Munroe ranch and the people dependent upon it, drawing James into a conflict over property and authority. The novel uses his mixed family background to place personal loyalty against a frontier system in which law is unevenly enforced and large landholders can convert wealth into coercion. Protecting the ranch requires James to decide which parts of the warrior identity he hoped to leave behind are still necessary.
