Troubled Border
Nate Carlton interrupts a bank robbery at the trailhead and discovers that the raid is tied to a political cause rather than ordinary theft. Drawn toward the borderlands, he becomes involved with rebels, smugglers and men still trying to refight or exploit the conflicts left by the Civil War. The novel places Carlton between divided loyalties and family danger as he tries to prevent a new conflict while deciding whether his estranged brother can be saved.
The border country magnifies the uncertainty left by the Civil War because political causes can provide cover for ordinary robbery while criminal networks exploit genuine grievances. Nate cannot rely on uniforms or declared allegiance to identify who is trustworthy. His brother’s involvement makes the distinction between public cause and private wrongdoing harder to maintain.
