Set in Scotland in 1600, Gowrie: or, The King’s Plot turns the mysterious events at Gowrie House into a historical thriller about James VI, the Ruthven family and a confrontation whose true purpose has never been entirely clear. James builds fictional motives and personal relationships around the extraordinary episode in which the king survived an apparent plot and the Earl of Gowrie and his brother were killed.

The historical government presented the event as a conspiracy against James, but contemporaries and later historians questioned important details. That uncertainty is ideal ground for James’s method. Rather than merely retelling an established sequence, the novel explores how competing explanations, private grudges and court interests might fit around the surviving facts. The result uses a real political mystery to create suspense without requiring the reader to accept one definitive solution to the Gowrie affair.
