A wounded veteran arrives in southwestern Oregon after the First World War hoping that the Rogue River country will offer distance from what he has endured. Instead he becomes involved in local disputes over fishing, conservation and livelihood, while a difficult romance ties him more closely to a community whose conflicts he cannot simply avoid.

The novel connects the veteran’s personal recovery with a region undergoing its own changes.
