Barnes Kilrone and Major Frank Paddock once served together as young officers and loved the same woman. Years later both men are stationed on a remote western military frontier, where old tensions have been buried beneath the routine of service rather than truly resolved.
When a Bannock war party threatens the region, Paddock leads his soldiers in pursuit and leaves Kilrone to defend the post's women and children. The separation forces each man to face a different form of danger: one in the field, the other at an exposed settlement with limited manpower. The novel combines an Indian Wars setting with the private history between two officers whose friendship has already survived jealousy and exile, and must now survive a crisis in which failure could cost an entire community.
