When her stepfather returns, takes control of the estate and evicts those who worked there, Katherine finds herself blamed for promises she can no longer keep.
Desperate to repay her companions and restore their trust, she turns to robbery on the road, entering the territory of the highwaywoman legend later attached to Katherine Ferrers. The final trilogy volume is less a claim that Ferrers was truly the ‘Wicked Lady’ than a fictional exploration of how such a legend might grow from dispossession, class resentment and the unstable politics of the Commonwealth.
