Warsaw Ghetto
1940–1943
German occupation authorities established the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940, forcing a vast Jewish population into an enclosed district under conditions of overcrowding, hunger, disease and systematic persecution. Movement was tightly controlled and contact with the outside world depended on permits, smuggling and clandestine networks.
Mass deportations to Treblinka began in 1942. In April 1943 Jewish resistance organisations launched the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising when German forces moved to complete the liquidation of the district, and the ghetto was destroyed after weeks of fighting.
Alex Gerlis’s Agent in Peril places the fictional scientist Roman Loszynski and his family inside the ghetto while British intelligence seeks to extract him. Their particular story is invented, but the confinement, danger and destruction surrounding the Warsaw Ghetto are historical.
