Izabela the Valiant

Izabela the Valiant is Adam Zamoyski’s biography of his ancestor Princess Izabela Czartoryska, whose life stretched from the final decades of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth through the partitions, the Napoleonic era and the post-1815 settlement. The book follows her marriage, love affairs, travels, family responsibilities and repeated experience of war and political upheaval as the Czartoryski estates were threatened and destroyed.

Zamoyski also traces Izabela’s development as an educational patron and collector who sought to preserve Polish historical memory after the state itself disappeared. Figures including Stanisław August Poniatowski and Alexander I appear within her documented political world. The biography is based heavily on family archives and is nonfiction.
