Sword Beach Landings

6 June 1944

Sword was the easternmost of the five main Allied landing beaches on D-Day. On 6 June 1944 the British 3rd Infantry Division, commandos and supporting units landed on the Normandy coast with the objectives of securing the beachhead, advancing toward Caen and linking with airborne forces east of the Orne.

The landings succeeded in establishing a foothold despite German resistance and congestion behind the beaches. Caen was not captured on D-Day, however, and the fighting around the city became one of the central struggles of the Normandy campaign.
