Sea of Spies
Richard Prince is sent to neutral Turkey after a British agent disappears while investigating trade that may be supplying Nazi Germany with strategically valuable material. Posing as a journalist, Prince enters an Istanbul crowded with diplomats, merchants and spies and is soon cut off from the support on which his mission depends.
The novel’s central agent and investigation are fictional, but the setting reflects Turkey’s genuine wartime neutrality, the strategic importance of chromium and the intense Allied and Axis intelligence activity in Istanbul. Gerlis uses that ambiguous neutral environment to turn economic warfare and diplomacy into the basis of an espionage thriller.
