MI9 is Helen Fry’s history of the British military intelligence organisation created to help Allied servicemen escape from captivity or evade capture in occupied Europe. It developed training, concealed maps and equipment, clandestine routes and debriefing systems intended to return men to Allied territory and preserve the security of the networks that assisted them.

The book follows resistance members, guides, safe-house keepers and intelligence officers whose work linked individual escapes into a transnational organisation. Figures such as Airey Neave and Mary Lindell appear within the documented history of MI9 and its associated escape lines. Fry draws on declassified files and eyewitness testimony to show that celebrated escapes depended on a much larger infrastructure of agents and civilians.
