MI9 was created early in the Second World War to help British and Allied servicemen escape from captivity or evade capture after being cut off in enemy-occupied territory. It developed equipment, training and clandestine systems intended to give escapers and evaders a realistic route back to Allied control.
The organisation worked with resistance groups and escape lines across occupied Europe. Couriers, safe-house keepers and guides faced severe penalties if discovered, while returning servicemen were debriefed so that routes could be improved and compromised networks identified.
Helen Fry’s MI9 reconstructs the organisation from declassified records and eyewitness testimony, including the work of figures such as Airey Neave and Mary Lindell. It emphasises the scale of the networks behind individual escape stories.
