Klaus Barbie was a German SS and Gestapo officer who became head of the Gestapo in Lyon during the German occupation of France. He directed repression against Resistance networks and was responsible for torture, deportation and crimes against Jewish civilians and other prisoners.
Barbie appears under his own historical identity in Alex Gerlis’s Agent in the Shadows, which centres on the 1943 crisis within the Lyon Resistance. His documented role in the arrest and interrogation of Resistance figures provides the historical framework; the novel’s British agents, traitor hunt and private dialogue are fictional reconstruction.
